UBCP/ACTRA Award Winners

Performers from across British Columbia were honoured in Vancouver on December 8 at the seventh annual UBCP/ACTRA Awards gala. Karin Konoval won the Best Actress Award for her role in The X-Files and the Best Actor Award went to Bob Frazer for his role in The Cannon. The Best Emerging Performer Award went to Daniel Doheny for his role in Adventures in Public School and Sabrina Pitre won the Best Voice Award for her role in Chuck’s Choice. Brett Chan, Andrew Chin, Mark Chin and Gerald Paetz took home the Best Stunt Award for their performances in Darc. Jennifer Clement was the recipient of the Lorena Gale Woman of Distinction Award and Lauro Chartrand was the recipient of the John Juliani Award of Excellence. ACTRA Manitoba Award Winners‍

Seven performance awards were presented at the ACTRA Manitoba Awards Gala event on October 12. In the feature category, Andrea Del Campo won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Female Role for Stegman Is Dead and Darren Wall won the Outstanding Performance Award by an Actor in a Male Role for Lovesick. For TV series, Marina Stephenson Kerr won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Female Role for Candle Cove and Dave Brown won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Male Role for Candle Cove. In the short category, Daina Leitold won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Female Role for The Interrogation, MA and BJ Verot won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Male Role for Fisher Cove. The Outstanding Stunt Performance Award was presented to Jeff Strome for his performance in No End House. The Wayne Nicklas Award was given to Phyllis Laing, CEO of Buffalo Gal Pictures, for her ongoing and outstanding contribution to ACTRA and her 30-year investment in Manitoba’s film community. The new ACTRA Manitoba Award, which recognizes exceptional engagement of our Manitoba talent in feature films or series, was given to productions Lovesick (Eagle Vision) and Stegman Is Dead (Julijette Inc).

Saskatchewan Arts Board‍

Joseph Naytowhow honoured by Saskatchewan Arts Board

The Saskatchewan Arts Board presented Joseph Naytowhow with the 2018 Arts and Learning Award. Joseph is a nêhiyaw (Cree) singer-songwriter, storyteller and actor from the Sturgeon Lake First Nation. With a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Saskatchewan and 15 years of study with a Buddhist master, Naytowhow shares his cultural knowledge in a compassionate and generous way. He has served as storyteller-in-residence for Meadow Lake Tribal Council, emerging elder with the Indian Teacher Education Program in Saskatoon and emerging elder/artistic adviser with the Living Sky School Division. Joseph is a recipient of the 2006 Canadian Aboriginal Music Award’s Keeper of the Tradition Award and received the Gemini Award for Best Ensemble Performance in an Animated Series in 2008 for his role in the Wapos Bay.

Ken Mitchell receives Lieutenant Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award

The Saskatchewan Arts Board presented Ken Mitchell with the 2018 Lieutenant Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Ken is a founding member of ACTRA Saskatchewan and well known for his literary works depicting prairie culture. His impact on the arts began a half-century ago through writing, teaching and volunteering. Ken helped establish the Saskatchewan Writers’ Guild, among other writerly organizations, and the Cathedral Village Arts Festival in Regina. He was also founding editor of the literary magazine, Grain.

Best Short at the 2018 ACTRA Montreal Short Film Festival

Congratulations Julian Stamboulieh, Jonathan Silver & Benjamin Anthony Warner. Caged was the winner of the Jury Prize for Best Short at the 2018 ACTRA Montreal Short Film Festival. Created by ACTRA members Julian Stamboulieh (director), Jonathan Silver (writer) and Benjamin Warner (producer), the heartwarming film stars Cat Lemieux. The Festival, established in 2003, is organized by YEAA Montreal as an annual showcase for short films created by ACTRA members under Montreal’s Member Initiated Production Agreement.

imagineNATIVE honours Michael Greyeyes

Actor, choreographer, director and educator Michael Greyeyes received the 2018 August Schellenberg Award of Excellence. His recent acting credits include Fear the Walking Dead (AMC), Woman Walks Ahead (A24), True Detective (HBO) and the feature Blood Quantum. Michael’s director credits include Pimooteewin (The Journey), the first Cree language opera with libretto by Tomson Highway, and Almighty Voice and his Wife (Native Earth Performing Arts). Michael is an Associate Professor in Theatre at York University. ACTRA is a proud sponsor of the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival’s August Schellenberg Award of Excellence.

ACTRA Newfoundland/Labrador 2018 Award of Excellence

“Robert Joy is a gifted and accomplished actor. Although his success is international, he often returns home to share the stage and screen with fellow Newfoundlanders,” said ACTRA Newfoundland/Labrador President Amy House at the July celebration. Robert’s numerous film roles include: Desperately Seeking Susan and Land of the Dead and Fallen; while TV lovers know him for his eight seasons as Sid Hammerback, the medical examiner on CSI:NY, he is also well known for his roles on The Blacklist, Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife, Masters of Sex and Everybody Loves Raymond.

John Koensgen receives ACTRA Ottawa 2018 Award of Excellence

The ACTRA Ottawa 2018 Lorraine Ansell Award of Excellence was presented to John Koensgen. His career has spanned more than four decades in front of the camera and on stages across Canada. John’s recent acting credits include Frankie Drake Mysteries (CBC) and The Truth About Christmas. John has served on the boards of ACTRA, Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, the Great Canadian Theatre Company and the Advisory Committee for the City of Ottawa.

ACTRA Ottawa honours Katherine Dines

Katherine Dines received the 2018 ACTRA Ottawa Woman of the Year Award. She has numerous film and TV credits and can be heard daily on MAJIC 100.3 radio. Katherine supports numerous organizations, including The Youth Services Bureau, Children’s Aid Society, The Royal Mental Health Centre, Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Centre, The University of Ottawa Heart Institute and The Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre.

Shelley Thompson wins WIDC Feature Film Award

Shelley Thompson, winner of the 2018 Women In the Director’s Chair Feature Film Award, will shoot her debut feature film Dawn, Her Dad & The Tractor in Nova Scotia. A banner year for Shelley, her film Duck Duck Goose won Best Short at the Atlantic International Film Festival where she also won the Best Actress Award for her performance in Thom Fitzgerald’s film Splinters. Shelley won her second ACTRA Maritimes Award for her role as Monica in The Child Remains. Shelly’s acting credits include eleven seasons of the Trailer Park Boys (Gemini Award for Best Ensemble Performance), six seasons of ITV-UK's Mike and Angelo and the cult classic Labyrinth with David Bowie. The WIDC prize comes with production and post-production support valued at $200,000. ACTRA is a proud WIDC sponsor.

Jayne Eastwood honoured with ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence

Canadian icon Jayne Eastwood is the recipient of the 2019 ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence. Her acting career spans nearly 50 years, starting memorably in 1970 with Don Shebib’s Canadian film classic Goin’ Down the Road. Jayne has hundreds of film credits including Chicago, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Hairspray. Her series work is also extensive with recurring roles in SCTV; two of George Walker’s series: This is Wonderland and Living in Your Car; King of Kensington; Bizarre; Little Mosque on the Prairie; Riverdale; Annedroids; and Haven. Jayne won the ACTRA Award for Best Actress in 1976; the Earle Grey Award for lifetime achievement in 1999; a Gemini Award for Dangerous Offender: The Marlene Moore Story in 1998; and the Dave Broadfoot Canadian Comedy Award in 2011. Jayne is also a busy voice actor with numerous credits including The Care Bears Movie, Scaredy Squirrel and Dino Dan. In 1999, Jayne won a Gemini Award for voicing Aunt Agatha in Noddy and Friends.
